At the western end of the Gulf of Follonica we find the town of Piombino. The town has ancient etruscan origins and has even been capital of an independent principality that lasted almost five centuries between 1399 and 1814.

The old town is placed on top of a promontory that extends right in front of the Elba Island, only 10 km off its coast.

This is the reason way the connections between Piombino and the island are so frequent. Every hour from the city port a ferry leaves for regular service towards Portoferraio, Cavo and Rio Marina. The service is improved during the all summer season.

The heart of the village is Piazza Bovio, a terrace overlooking the sea from which you can enjoy a beautiful panorama. Along the coast are located even numerous beaches and ancient towers used until the nineteenth century to protect the territory.

Not to far from the historic center you can visit the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia, an archaeological area of 80 hectares that includes some etruscan necropolis: a unique example in the whole Tuscany.
